I open chrome and entered my router ip address (192.168.1.1) and then checked my DNS servers which were indeed different (218.xx.xx.xx)

Weird, why was windows 10 automatically switching my DNS servers to google servers. My settings were already set up to obtain the DNS server address automatically which should not be a problem and should also not be google DNS servers. I then navigated to control panel->network and sharing center->wifi (my router's name)->clicked on properties->double clicked on (TCP/IPv4). This was strange because i never changed the DNS to google DNS. Strangely it was google DNS which is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. I went to the settings app (metro app)->network and internet->wifi->scrolled down to and click advanced options->checked my IPv4 DNS servers. I was having the same problem (on wifi though not hard wired): I figured mine was a DNS issue because I could use skype.
